ITIN Application Guide 2026 Form W-7

ITIN Application Guide 2026 — Form W-7 Complete Walkthrough

An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is a 9-digit tax ID issued by the IRS for individuals who need to file a US tax return but are not eligible for a Social Security Number. This guide explains who needs an ITIN, how to apply, and what documents are required.

Who Needs an ITIN?

  • Nonresident alien spouses who are claimed on a US resident’s return
  • Nonresident alien dependents (children, parents) claimed as exemptions
  • F1 students with scholarship or fellowship income but no work authorization
  • Investors receiving US-source income (dividends, capital gains) without work authorization
  • Foreign nationals who receive US rental income or other passive income
  • Treaty benefit claimants who need to file a return to claim DTAA benefits

Who Does NOT Need an ITIN?

  • Anyone eligible for and who has applied for a Social Security Number
  • Nonresident aliens who have no US filing requirement

ITIN Application — Form W-7

The ITIN application is filed using Form W-7 along with your tax return (or a standalone application in limited circumstances) and supporting identity documents.

Supporting Documents Required

You must prove both identity and foreign status. A passport alone satisfies both requirements and is the recommended document. Other acceptable documents include:

  • Passport (preferred — proves both identity and foreign status)
  • National identity card + birth certificate
  • US visa + foreign birth certificate
  • Foreign driver’s license + foreign birth certificate
Important: The IRS requires original documents or certified copies issued by the issuing agency. Photocopies are not accepted. Bluewings Tax as a Certified Acceptance Agent (CAA) can verify original documents and certify copies — you do not need to mail your original passport to the IRS.

ITIN Processing Time

  • Standard processing: 6–11 weeks
  • During peak season (January–April): up to 14 weeks
  • You will receive your ITIN by mail
  • Your tax return will not be processed until the ITIN is issued

ITIN Renewal

ITINs expire if not used on a federal return for 3 consecutive years, or if they were issued before 2013 with certain middle digits. Bluewings Tax can assist with ITIN renewal using Form W-7 as well.
