Bluewings TaxTAX & BUSINESS SUPPORT
INDIA & CANADA

India–Canada Cross-Border Tax Services

Bluewings Tax helps individuals, families and business owners coordinate Indian and Canadian tax preparation. Start with your residency history, income and accounts in both countries so the returns, additional reporting and fee can be agreed in writing.

Choose your primary service country in the enquiry form and mention both India and Canada in your message. Contact the team if you prefer to speak first.

Canadian T1 and Indian ITR filing, considered together

A move between India and Canada can leave you with income, property and tax records in both places. Our team has India–Canada cross-border experience and can assess your Indian income tax return, Canadian personal return and any additional work needed for the agreed engagement.

Tell us whether you need one country’s return or coordinated preparation in both. Business, payroll, bookkeeping and corporate-return work are scoped separately from an individual’s filings.

Who this service is for

  • Newcomers to Canada: people arriving from India with Indian salary, bank accounts, investments or rental property.
  • NRIs living in Canada: people with Indian income, TDS, investments or property transactions alongside Canadian filing needs.
  • People returning to India: people retaining Canadian income, accounts, investments, property or business interests.
  • Families and business owners: people whose household, work or ownership arrangements involve both countries.

What we review before preparation

Residency and the reporting period

We start with your travel history, homes, family ties and the relevant years. Canadian and Indian tax residency use their own rules. Citizenship, a visa or the label NRI does not settle every tax-residency question.

For newcomers, the CRA requires world income in Canadian dollars for the part of the year you were resident in Canada; the nonresident period has different reporting rules. See the CRA’s newcomer return guidance.

Income, withholding and tax already paid

Identify salary, bank interest, dividends, rent, capital gains, self-employment and business income in both countries. We review source records and tax-payment evidence so the proposed preparation, TDS reconciliation and any treaty or tax-credit analysis can be scoped.

Accounts, investments and ownership

List your bank and investment accounts, pensions, property and business interests, including jointly held assets. Ask which income and information-reporting forms are included. Reporting an account and reporting the income it produces are different parts of the review.

Documents for your first review

Canada records

  • Prior Canadian returns, notices of assessment and CRA correspondence.
  • Available T4, T5 and other income slips, investment statements and relevant deduction records.
  • Arrival or departure dates, travel history, province or territory, and information about homes and family ties.
  • Business, rental-property and payroll records if those services are needed.

India records

  • Prior Indian returns and the relevant financial year and assessment year.
  • Form 26AS, AIS, relevant Form 16 or 16A certificates and evidence of taxes paid.
  • Bank-interest, rental, investment and property-sale records, including acquisition and transaction information.
  • India travel dates and any notices or earlier filing issues.

Describe your situation in the initial enquiry. Share identity documents, account details and tax records through the client portal after onboarding.

Two situations to discuss with your preparer

Moving to Canada while retaining a rental flat in India

This illustrative situation needs the move timeline, rental receipts and expenses, Indian TDS records and Canadian income documents. The team identifies the proposed Indian and Canadian preparation and any separate credit or reporting work before quoting.

Returning to India with Canadian investments or property

Provide the move history, account and property records, income dates and prior returns from both countries. A review should establish the relevant residency periods and which current or earlier-year services are included, rather than copying figures from one return into another.

India–Canada filing questions

Can Bluewings Tax coordinate both countries’ returns?

Yes. Tell us the countries, years and income involved. We assess the preparation needs and confirm the Indian and Canadian returns, additional reporting, professional responsibilities and fee in your written quote.

Does the treaty mean I only file in one country?

Do not assume so. The India–Canada agreement addresses matters including residency, taxing rights and relief from double taxation. The relevant income, treaty provisions and domestic filing rules still need review. Consult the official India–Canada tax agreement for the treaty text.

Does NRI status decide which Indian return I use?

The filing year, residency and income categories determine the appropriate form and supporting work. Review the Income Tax Department’s nonresident return guidance and our India NRI return-selection guide.

Do Indian accounts or property need Canadian T1135 reporting?

Canadian residents generally review Form T1135 when the aggregate cost of specified foreign property exceeds C$100,000, subject to exceptions. Personal-use property is excluded. An individual does not file T1135 for the year they first become a Canadian resident, but this does not remove the separate requirement to report worldwide income for the Canadian-resident part of that year. See the CRA T1135 questions and answers, CRA newcomer return guidance and our Canadian foreign-property reporting guide.

What records support Indian TDS reconciliation and Canadian tax-credit review?

For an initial review, prepare Form 26AS, AIS, relevant Form 16 or 16A, bank-interest records, rental or investment statements, Indian returns and tax computations, and evidence of tax paid. We review the income and withholding records and confirm the country returns, reconciliation and tax-credit work in the written scope. Missing or inconsistent TDS records need review before figures are carried into a return; withholding alone does not establish credit eligibility. See our India NRI tax-filing guide.

What does the quotation include?

Confirm the tax years, country returns, additional forms, bookkeeping or business work, currency and fee. A Canadian T1 price is not automatically a combined two-country package. Earlier-year corrections, notices and separate information reports should be agreed explicitly.
