Tax preparation for a life connected to the US and India
Living, working or holding assets in both countries can mean more than one set of filing obligations. Bluewings Tax helps individuals and business owners assess their US–India tax preparation needs and coordinate the agreed filing work.
Discuss your US–India filingWho this service is for
Individuals and families
People living in the US with Indian income, property, accounts or investments; people returning to India; and families with income in both countries.
Students and visa holders
People whose travel history, immigration status or move year needs review before choosing their US tax return and assessing possible treaty benefits.
Business owners
Owners with a US entity and an India connection who need the entity, ownership, activity and reporting scope assessed. Business work is quoted separately from an individual’s return.
What we assess before preparation
- Where you lived and worked, your citizenship/immigration history and the dates relevant to each tax year.
- Employment, self-employment, rental and investment income, plus taxes already withheld or paid in each country.
- Foreign accounts, investments and ownership interests that may require additional reporting.
- Which federal, state and Indian filings are included in the engagement and which require separate work.
NRI does not mean US nonresident alien. US tax residency is assessed under US rules; an immigration label alone does not determine the return form. See the IRS explanation of visa status and tax residency.
Treaty benefits and foreign reporting need a separate review
The US–India treaty can affect particular income and claims, but benefits depend on the relevant article and your circumstances. It is not a blanket exemption from filing or tax. The IRS treaty documents and treaty-claim guidance explain the conditions and limitations.
FBAR and Form 8938 are separate reporting requirements; filing one does not automatically satisfy the other. We assess their applicability as part of the agreed scope. See the IRS comparison.
Documents to have ready
- Prior US and Indian tax returns, notices and tax-payment records.
- Travel dates and a summary of where you lived and worked during the relevant years.
- W-2/1099 documents, Indian salary or tax statements, and rental/investment records where relevant.
- Foreign-account and asset information requested for your case, including relevant balances.
- For businesses: ownership details, formation records and accounting statements.
This is an initial checklist. Your preparer may request more information. Use the client portal for sensitive documents.
Pricing and engagement scope
Basic US federal preparation starts at $79 and each state return at $89. US business filing starts at $350; eligible zero-activity business filing is $199. These USD starting prices are not a complete two-country package quote.
Final fees depend on the tax years, forms, documents and complexity. Confirm the scope of India filing, treaty analysis and foreign reporting in your quote. FBAR and FATCA services are excluded from discounts.
US–India filing questions
Does Indian citizenship decide whether I file Form 1040-NR?
No. US tax residency and the applicable filing rules must be assessed. Citizenship, immigration status and tax residency are related facts, but are not interchangeable labels.
Will a treaty remove all double taxation?
Do not assume so. The income type, residency position, treaty provision and credit rules need review. A credit or treaty benefit is not guaranteed, and filing or information-reporting obligations can still apply.
Can you help when I have moved between countries?
Start an enquiry with the year of the move and the countries involved. We will assess the scope before confirming the preparation work and quote.
